Another Great Visit to Stara Basan School and Orphanage

In early September, after the summer break, St. Paul’s Church youth ministry resumed its regular visits to the orphanage in Stara Basan. This time, Yulia joined the team, which included Children and Orphans Program Director, Vika R., and Andriy from the youth ministry. Yulia, also part of the youth ministry, is the lead singer of the youth worship group.

Upon their arrival, it was clear that the children had been eagerly anticipating the visit. The teachers informed the ministers that the kids had spent the whole morning at the windows waiting. The reunion was filled with joyful emotions as stories were exchanged about what had happened during their time apart. The welcomed callers distributed gifts, followed by a Bible lesson and prayer. The children sang Christian songs and played games, leaving the staff in awe of how open, cheerful, and lively the kids were being transformed before their very eyes.

Vika shared that this trip wasn’t easy physically. The three had carried heavy bags filled with gifts for the children; clothes, school supplies, household items for the orphanage, and more. Getting everything transported on the train was tough and extremely challenging.

The train ride back was crowded to capacity, with no available seats; standing room only for an hour and a half in the heat and discomfort. But all the inconveniences faded away when remembering the joyful eyes of the children and hearing their stories – like a child finally being able to spend cherished time with their mom on a recent visit to the orphanage. It was heartwarming to witness the youngsters attentively listening to Bible lessons and quietly reciting the prayers to themselves.

Spending time with one boy known for his difficult behavior was also unforgettable. Learning that his aggression stems from the absence of his parents – his constant sadness and tears – made the trip all the more meaningful. Some of these children have been removed from their parents and are considered social orphans, such as this young man. After a warm and compassionate conversation with him, seeing him calm down and join the other children in play was truly rewarding.

It was also inspiring to watch Andriy and Yulia, the two young volunteers, grow through this ministry, enduring the difficulties of the trip, because they genuinely wanted to make a difference in the lives of these forsaken children. The youth ministry is already preparing for the next visit to the school and orphanage. It is anticipated that more volunteers will want to join the small ministry team. Thanks be to God for Music Mission Kiev and the opportunity to be part of such a vibrant and valuable mission.
