Bringing Christmas Hope to Wounded Soldiers
The holiday season is a time when people yearn to be surrounded by loved ones, seeking connection, belonging, and a spark of expectation. Music Mission Kiev (MMK) has upheld its heartfelt tradition of bringing joy and encouragement to wounded soldiers in hospitals. Recently, the Kyiv Symphony Orchestra and Chorus ladies prepared a special performance of Ukrainian Christmas carols, accompanied by thoughtful gifts for the soldiers.
Although only a few soldiers initially attended the concert, its impact on those present was profound. Many recorded the entire performance on their phones, treasuring the music as a source of solace and inspiration. The carols and the care shown by MMK were clearly helping to heal invisible wounds. The MMK team later discovered why so many soldiers were absent. A recent influx of new patients included individuals grappling with deep desolation and severe physical and emotional trauma. Many felt isolated and reluctant to engage with others, ashamed of their injuries or distorted appearances.
In response to this unexpected development, MMK perceptively chose to extend their holiday cheer beyond the walls of the hospital’s concert hall. With approval from medical staff and psychologists, chorus members, MMK staff, and youth from St. Paul's Church visited soldiers directly in their hospital rooms. They sang carols, shared messages of optimism, and offered warm embraces to those who needed them most. The combination of beautiful singing, genuine compassion, and heartfelt words began to break through the ice of despair. Hospital doctors and psychologists observed a remarkable improvement in the soldiers' spirits following these visits.
One encounter stood out among many. A soldier named Sergey, who had experienced a significant amputation, had been isolating himself, refusing to engage with anyone. When MMK's team visited his room, they sang “Shchedryk” (Carol of the Bells) and presented him with a drawing created by an autistic youth participant. Overwhelmed by the gesture, Sergey, despite his physical and emotional pain, stood up to hug everyone in the room. Tears of gratitude filled his eyes, a testament to the deep impact of love and connection.
Amid pain and suffering, Christmas found its way into the hospital, bringing light and aspiration. These visits not only uplifted the soldiers, but also reaffirmed the importance of MMK’s mission. Witnessing lives touched and hearts softened strengthens the team’s resolve to continue this vital work, reminding everyone involved that even small acts of kindness can create a ripple of hope and healing.
