Missa Popularis – A Swedish Composition’s Ukrainian Premiere
Winter has passed, giving way to longer days, warmer sunlight, and a renewed sense of life. Yet, beyond the changing seasons, there is something even more intense that warms the soul—music that inspires, uplifts and gives us the strength to dream and move forward.
Once again, the Kyiv Symphony Orchestra and Chorus (KSOC) gifted its audience an unforgettable evening of music. This time, however, the concert carried special significance: it marked the Ukrainian premiere of works by Swedish composer Mårten Jansson.
The evening began with a video message from the composer himself. Dressed in a traditional Ukrainian vyshyvanka (an embroidered shirt), Jansson warmly addressed the audience, sharing the inspiration behind his compositions and expressing his sincere support for the Ukrainian people. He also voiced his hope of visiting the country in person one day. His words resonated deeply, setting a poignant tone for the performance.
KSOC performed two of Jansson’s compositions—Missa Popularis and Requiem Novum. As the composer explained, these pieces are engrained in Swedish folk traditions. For Ukrainian listeners, this connection to national heritage carried particular substance, reminding them of the importance of preserving cultural identity. The evening’s music, combined with masterful performances, created a space for deep reflection - an opportunity to spiritually prepare for Easter. The melodies invited contemplation on life’s fleeting nature, the profound sacrifice of Jesus on the cross, and the need to pause, consider, and seek strength for the future.
As the concert unfolded, these emotions lingered in the air. The power of music allowed the audience to momentarily step away from the burdens of daily life, to breathe, and to turn their thoughts toward God. It was a reminder of His suffering and, more importantly, of the triumph that followed. The Resurrection, after all, is a story of hope - one that fills the heart with faith in a brighter future.
A heartfelt thank you to Mårten Jansson and KSOC for this extraordinary pre-Easter concert. If you would like to experience it for yourself, you can watch the recording below.
