Palm Sunday Reflection: 760 Days of War and Beyond

As Palm Sunday arrives this year, Ukraine marks its 760th day entrenched in conflict. Drawing from recent insights by Serhiy Basarab, I am attempting to provide an overview of the current state of affairs. Amidst the complexities of the Russian-induced war, Ukraine faces a myriad of challenges across various fronts. While demonstrating resilience in the face of adversity since the invasion, the journey towards resolution remains strewn with obstacles.

Despite concerted efforts by Ukrainian forces, many regions find themselves locked in a stalemate. The ongoing struggle for control over critical territories like Donetsk and Luhansk manifests in violent skirmishes and breaches of ceasefires never agreed upon. Russia's aggressive military endeavors and backing of separatist factions present formidable hurdles to Ukraine's military progress.

Diplomatic endeavors to rally international support and censure Russian aggression have yielded mixed outcomes. While Ukraine has garnered widespread solidarity from Western allies and condemnation of Russian actions, securing tangible support such as military aid and sanctions has encountered diplomatic hurdles. Balancing diplomatic engagements with the harsh realities of conflict proves to be a precarious tightrope for Ukrainian leadership. It leaves many observers disheartened, and so I encourage you to pray for wisdom for the leaders around the world.

The prolonged conflict exacerbates the humanitarian crisis, causing displacement, infrastructure destruction, and economic instability, inflicting suffering beyond our imagination. Addressing the plight of internally displaced persons (IDPs), as resource strains hamper essential service provision and community support, altering Ukraine's landscape. Our expanding ministry to IDPs continues to be highly valued.

Economically, Ukraine grapples with inflation, currency depreciation, and disrupted trade relations, diverting resources towards military spending and reconstruction. Rebuilding their infrastructure and rejuvenating their industries in conflict zones are imperative for long-term recovery and stability. The significance of our support and humanitarian aid is a temporary (but needed) bridge until Ukraine recovers.

The false narrative on Ukraine’s corruption needs to be addressed. "Ukraine is a corrupt country, and the financial aid is not audited or monitored." This statement is false. All financial aid sent to Ukraine is closely monitored and audited. In fact, the level of scrutiny is much higher than with any other country. Moreover, the significant reduction in systemic corruption over the past years has put Ukraine as the top improved country in the world. I learned this at the recent Ukrainian Week in Washington, DC in early February.

Beyond the tangible impacts, the conflict has also taken a significant psychological toll on the Ukrainian population. The constant threat of violence, loss of life, and uncertainty about the future have engendered feelings of fear, anxiety, and trauma among civilians. Addressing the mental and spiritual health needs of individuals affected by the conflict will be essential for fostering resilience and social cohesion in post-war Ukraine. Our focus on spiritual trauma care healing training is part of the healing and peace making we want to help foster.

Navigating the complexities of war with Russia, Ukraine's path to resolution remains uncertain, necessitating a multifaceted approach encompassing diplomacy, aid, economic revitalization, and countering aggression. I urge continued prayers for wisdom and peace, recognizing and supporting Ukraine's unwavering commitment to sovereignty and democratic values amid adversity.

Amidst the challenges, your support holds immeasurable value, offering intangible benefits to every individual affected. Our mission is about cherishing each life, reflecting God's love and deserving of our unwavering support and commitment to share the good news of the Risen Savior, Jesus through word and action.

I implore you to take time to write your congressional leaders to speed up the release of Ukraine military support. Please keep the people and country of Ukraine in your prayers today and for the days ahead.
